Mellow Pages, The Smokers Guide to Amsterdam by Kip,
was the original guidebook to Amsterdam's coffeeshops. There
were at least six different editions over the course of several
years and then the book and Kip suddenly disappeared. I know
that he was getting some hassle from the publishers of Yellow
Pages but, other than that, I have no idea what happened.
If you find a recent edition, grab it - it's much better
than some of the other guides available in Amsterdam. If anyone
knows what happened to the book or Kip, please let me know.

Smokers Guide
has filled the vacuum left by the demise of Mellow Pages.
It has some good info but is packed with adverts. Personally,
I object to paying money for a book full of adverts. Having
said that, the latest edition is better and their web site
is very good.

The Underground Guide to Amsterdam also carries adverts
between it's "critical" reviews. I have no reason
to believe that the editorial integrity of these guides has
been compromised but when a review appears next to an advert
for the same shop there is always the suspicion that it's
not as critical as it might be.
The Amsterdam Coffeeshop Directory is proud of its independence.
Although we carry occasional adverts for pipes, hotels, etc.
we will not take adverts from coffee shops. No shop has paid
for its entry in this guide.

Get Lost,
The Cool Guide to Amsterdam by Joe Pauker, is worth
paying for. It's not specifically about coffeeshops but an
excellent general guide to Amsterdam.
This is really the only book worth buying. For everything
else there are the free books and magazines shown below.

Freebies. These maps and guides are full of adverts but
they're free so it's fair enough. |
